Common Interview Questions to be Prepared For

Finding a construction job can be a stressful process. As good as it feels to finally land an interview at a company you can see yourself working for, the interview itself can be a source of great anxiety for a lot of people.

What kind of questions will they ask? What type of answers are they looking for? How can you make the best first impression possible?

The good news is that many employers use the same types of interview questions. There are also certain types of questions that will vary by industry.

We have compiled a collection of common job interview questions and how to ace them, from general questions used by employees in any industry to questions more likely to apply directly to the construction industry.

Common Job Interview Questions

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • What would you say are your biggest strengths and weaknesses?
  • What do you know about our company, and why are you interested in working for us?
  • Where do you see yourself in five or ten years?
  • What do you hope to accomplish in your next role?
  • Describe a unique talent or skill that you will bring to our team.
  • Tell me about a time you disagreed with a decision made by your boss and how you handled that.
  • What was the last time you went above and beyond on a project, and why did you do that?
  • What type of coworkers do you hope to work with or do you work best with?
  • Do you have any questions for me?

As you can see, most interviewers provide a range of questions that can either be very broad or more specific. It can be challenging to know how to answer each one appropriately, especially those that feel vaguer.

Always try to give them the most genuine answer possible. You want to showcase everything that you are capable of, but providing misleading or vague answers will only hurt your chances of securing the job.

Skill-Based Questions

Employers are looking to assess your skillset and experience. They may ask questions like:

  • Tell me about a time you learned a new skill for a job.
  • Do you have any areas of specialization or unique certifications?
  • How do you adapt to disruptions on the job?
  • Tell me about a work accomplishment you are proud of.
  • Why should we hire you?

Construction Interview Questions

  • What are the biggest challenges you have faced during a project, and how did you overcome them?
  • Have you ever been injured while on the job? If so, what happened, and what steps have you taken to prevent future injuries?
  • Have you ever had a customer be dissatisfied with your work? If so, how did you address this? If not, how would you handle a situation like this?
  • Describe a time where you had a disagreement with a coworker about the project you were working on. How did you handle this situation?
  • Tell me about a suggestion you made about a job that was implemented by your company.

Depending on the exact job role you are applying for, you may be asked very different types of questions.

In general, for the construction industry, you should be prepared to answer questions related to workplace safety practices and strategies for completing jobs.
